Celebrating 100 Years of SSP Production at Our Hobart Manufacturing Plant

Impact Fertilisers is proud to commemorate a remarkable milestone—100 years of Australian-made single superphosphate (SSP) production at its manufacturing plant in Hobart, Tasmania. Since its establishment in 1924, this facility has been at the forefront of SSP manufacturing supporting Australian Agriculture and Tasmanian farmers in feeding the world.

The Hobart plant originally began operations in 1916 under the ownership of EZ Industries, functioning as a zinc refinery and producing high-quality alloy metal. In 1924, the facility expanded its operations to begin manufacturing Single Superphosphate (SSP) for the Australian fertiliser industry. Before this, Tasmania produced very little fertiliser. However, since the zinc refinery was already generating sulphuric acid as a by-product, using it to produce SSP became an obvious and logical progression. A century later, the plant stands tall, with an annual production capacity of up to 170,000 tonnes of SSP fertiliser and employing over 40 people directly. Impact Fertilisers exemplifies a steadfast commitment to the Australian industrial landscape.

As the Hobart plant celebrates its centenary year in 2024, Impact Fertilisers remains dedicated to producing quality SSP for the local Tasmanian market. Jim Mole, CEO of Ameropa Australia, the parent company of Impact Fertilisers, reflects on this achievement: “We have many staff who have worked at the plant for over 20 years, which is a proud accomplishment.”

The significance of domestic manufacturing is deeply ingrained in Impact Fertilisers' operations. The company leverages its proximity to the local market to respond swiftly to diverse seasonal demands. Jim Mole aptly sums it up: “We proudly support local industries in Tasmania, underpinned by a workforce that is proud to work in Australian manufacturing.”
